White-washed and beautiful, PRI 0289 is a wonderfully renovated home that gives generously and greets warmly. Step inside and you'll be immersed into a world of enchantment and character, although with very 21st-century comforts. Head outside and you'll be amazed by a sense of freedom, thanks to the 3 ha of private gardens, orchards and woodland that spread around the property to create a haven of quiet and peace.
Accommodation is divided out over the main house itself, most of which is on the ground level, and two independent guest rooms, one accessed externally from the roof terrace, the other from the gardens. The main entrance leads into a cozy and rather spacious entrance hall. Vaulted ceilings, soft, creamy stone walls, and grey flagged floors create the first impression of the property’s architectural origin and its old history. A couple of easy chairs are placed at one side, and at the far end, just beyond a spiral staircase leading down to the wine cellar, a door opens out onto the wraparound terraces. Art objects, both antique and modern, add splashes of colour, character and interest.
The entrance hall not only offers a hint at the architectural style of the property, but also functions as a central spot, from which the accommodation fans out. On the left, there is a living area with a sofa, a feature fireplace, terrace access from both ends, and an number of niches and other authentic architectural elements telling about the property's agricultural roots.
A door leads into the first bedroom, a double-twin (90/180 × 200) with in-room shower and sink, a separate WC, and access to the surrounding terraces. A lockable interconnecting door joins the first bedroom to the second (which can also be entered separately from the terraces). This chapel-like double (180 × 200) features lofty ceilings, an originally designed walk-in shower under a semi arch, an in-room sink, a separate WC and a stone flight of steps which may once have led up to the roof terrace or a storage space.
To visit the remaining accommodation on the ground level, we should go back to the entrance hall, where, on the right, a couple of steps lead down into the lovely and cozy dining room. At the centre sits a large wooden table seating 12; at one end, a door opens out onto the surrounding terraces; at the other one more door leads into the well-equipped modern kitchen with a breakfast bar and direct access to one of the outdoor dining terraces.
An opening to one side of the dining room allows the space to flow into a wonderfully furnished living room, equipped with feature fireplace, TV, and terrace access. At the far end of the living room are two doors. The first leads into a large double bedroom (180 × 200) with en-suite shower room and terrace access. The second opens into a little hallway with doors leading to the kitchen, the guest WC and a second hall off which there is a suite, consisting of a charming living area furnished with a sofa, a generous double bedroom (180 × 200) with terrace access, and an en-suite shower room.
Back for the last time to the entrance hall, a spiral staircase leads down to the well-stocked wine cellar, which offers a table and chairs so that guests can come together to taste Puglia’s superb wines in a private, quiet ambience.
Heading outside onto the wraparound terraces, an external staircase leads up to the roof of the house, where, with access from a small hallway, you will find the first guest room, a good-sized double (180 × 200) with en-suite shower room, amazing views and a pair of doors opening out onto the generous roof terrace. The second guest room, which is accessed from the terraces surrounding the house, is a large double bedroom (180 × 200) with authentic fireplace (now decorative) and an en-suite shower room.
The villa erects among of private terraces, lawns and orchards, which spread out around in concentric circles. Near the main gate, a copse of tall mature trees rises high, protecting the grounds from the curious eyes. All the rooms on the ground level of the house, as well as the second guest room, open out onto wraparound stone-flagged terraces. There are lots of furnished areas, some with sofas and armchairs, others with dining tables (one of those is set just outside the kitchen and equipped with a barbecue).
These terraces are divided by green lawns, which fan out in all directions. To one side, they adjoin a hot tub and, a little further away, the fabulous 15m-long, heated pool, which is completed with double daybeds, sun loungers and a changing room with outdoor showers. The final circle of the grounds is given over to a large orchard, which further strengthens the sense of isolation, privacy and country-style living.
The icing on the cake, however, is the generous roof-top terrace, which is accessed via an external flight of steps. Here you will enjoy not only picturesque vistas of the surrounding countryside, but also a variety of areas furnished and equipped for relaxing, cooking, dining and even pampering, due to another hot tub.
The villa sits just 8km inland from the historic and charming town of Polignano a Mare, known for its cliff-hanging old town centre and its fabulous beach, and for being the birthplace of the singer-songwriter Domenico Modugno. A few kilometers down the coast, meanwhile, is the pretty seaside town of Monopoli, which is home to a lively street market, a maze of streets, a 16th-century castle and plenty of shops, bars and restaurants. There are lots of beaches and swimming bays along the coast around both towns. Also close by is Castellana Grotte, celebrated for its impressive cave complex, which offers over 3km of subterranean paths, cathedral-high caverns, stalactites and much more, all running about 60m below ground.
A short drive inland will take you to the gentle hills of the Valle d'Itria, where you might explore the picturesque towns of Alberobello (a UNESCO Heritage Site due to its amazing trulli-laden centre), Cisternino and, further south, the white city of Ostuni. All boast plenty to see, regular markets, as well as a good choice of bars, shops, restaurants and trattorie. World class sites a little further afield include the fantastic baroque centre of Lecce, while golf enthusiasts will be pleased to know that the villa is less than half an hour's drive from two golf courses near Savelletri to the southeast.
